There is a freezer in my grandmothers basement that was abandoned about 40 years ago with alot of food in it. It hasn't been opened since, what can I expect to find in it after all that food has been rotting in there for so long.

There is no possibility of me using that freezer for food that I eat. It has not been running for those forty years.

* Assuming its been running, It won't be rotten, just be really really really freezer burnt. Make sure you have plenty of plastic bags and dump it on the day they pick it up because when that stuff thaws it will be a mess.

On the other hand it could be all shriveled up. Take a peek and you will get a faster answer than anyone on this site could give.

If the freezer has not been running, don't open it. Just throw the whole thing out, freezer and all. A 40 old freezer is no good anyway, I'm sure it won't run and the bacteria and who knows what deadly germs will come out of that bad boy.

Expect to find a hard, dusty compost -nothing more than that. After all those years, nothing can be eaten thus insects or small animals are least likely to stay there not unless it has been made as the haven of animals like rats pehaps. Expect also that the freezer is no longer in the same shape as it was before. The moisture in it before had made most of its part rusty causing it to deteriorate, and disintegrate its parts. Don't ne surprised if you will be welcomed by dusts out of dried fungus and molds once you open it. Lastly expect the unexpected.(I believe that the freezer is unfunctional all thoughout those years.) ♥

Oh my...I'd be scared to pen that freezer! There are probably several new and scarey species of mold growing away in there! LOL. It's probably all dark and furry inside! Beware!

seriously i'm no mad scientist and I cant help you there's probably a lot of ice in it if food stays frozen it doesnt rot, however I highly doubt that after 40 years any of it would be safe for consumption.
