*Todd Jones did so with the Tigers*

Some players realize that they really enjoyed playing where they were at, so they try to get back to where they were. The situation was excellent for Jones, considering the Tigers weren't supposed to be great. For another example, in the last 90's, Igor Larionov signed as a free agent to the Florida Panthers. He was miserable there, so Kenny Holland traded him back to the Red Wings. This is the 3rd time Dominik Hasek is back with the Wings. Billy Martin coached the Yankees at least 3 separate times if not 4. In other words, the pastures are not always greener on the other side.

A lot of players go back to play with an old team, usually near the end of their careers. And it's usually a city where they had some success and/or they were a fan favorite.

Part of it has to do with money. Either a) they were offered more money to come back, or b) there were no other good offers, so they took less to return "home".

A lot of times a player will sign a one-day contract with their first (or favorite) team in order to retire as a member of that team. Can't beat nostalgia, right?

Besides money - they get to play for a team and in a town they're familiar with. There's a certain comfort level there that they wouldn't see with a new team.
