People are trying to help. I know this may be a difficult concept for some.
Wikipedia is a contributed source, as you may know. Yahoo Answers is also a contributed source. I don't see why and how Wikipedia is any worse. With wikki, at least there is hope that someone proof-read it. Here, you never know who's responding - a drunk Ph.D. student or 12 year old trying to be smart and helpful, or somebody who actually knows something on the subject.
If you have a critical mind, you will take every answer with a grain of salt, no matter what the reference is - wikki, my own mind or my CRC Handbook. If you don't - well you'd be in trouble with Yahoo Answers.

Because it is relatively simple to link to such a place.
And also because some parts of Wikipedia entries ARE reliable because they have been taken from reliable sources. Not all entries are unreliable.
Also because some people do not recognize or take in consideration that Wikipedia is a site that allows for users to vandalize it, or they believe in the better part of man and that they will not do blatant acts such as that.
And all answers I have ever seen anywhere are human-made answers.

A study published in the prestigious journal "Nature" showed that the error rates in Wikipedia were statistically no differant from Encyclopedia Brittanica. So who's the real moron here?

It depends on what you are looking for. Wikipedia is a social blog encyclopedia, nothing at all like Britannica. People just add there definition to a subject. It's more of a fun thing than a reference.
