Their body is covered by a hard cuticle. It prevents water loss from the body. Moreover , they have jointed legs, wings in many of them, tracheal system which enables many arthropods to get oxygen directly without the intermediary molecule, the respiratory pigment, although many have hemocyanin. They have compound eyes. They have the power to overcome the ill-effects of pesticides.

Arthropods (Phylum Arthropoda) (from Greek ἀρθρον, meaning joint and πούς/ποδός, meaning foot) are the largest phylum of animals and include the insects, arachnids, crustaceans, and others. More than 80% of described living animal species are arthropods [1], with over a million modern species described and a fossil record reaching back to the early Cambrian. Arthropods are common throughout marine, freshwater, terrestrial, and even aerial environments, as well as including various symbiotic and parasitic forms. They range in size from microscopic plankton (~¼ mm) up to forms several metres long.
Arthropods are characterised by the possession of a segmented body with appendages on each segment. They have a dorsal heart and a ventral nervous system. All arthropods are covered by a hard exoskeleton made of chitin, a polysaccharide, which provides physical protection and resistance to desiccation. Periodically, an arthropod sheds this covering when it moults.

One reason they are so successful is their hard exoskeleton and their appendages, which helpl them eat, move defend themselves, blah blah. Also, because they have an open circulatory system comprised of several tiny hearts throughout their bodies.

Massive breeding. They can lay thousands of eggs, tens of thousands in some species, in a lifetime and do it in a relatively short span of time in terms of gestation period. Sheer numbers.
