I have had my 10 gal tank for about 2 and a half months now. I have 2 fish in it. They aren't as small as guppies,k they are probably double the size. Well I want to take those out and put guppies in. I have tried it once, but they all got sucked into the filter. What could the problem have been? I was thinking the levels of chemicals in the water was too high, so I have been changing 1/10 of the water 2 times a week. The water is alot clearer now. Do you think my tank would handle around 3 guppies if I took the other 2 out? What can I do to it that would help the guppies from getting sucked into the filter.

The chances are the filter may be too big then for the guppys themselves , too much gph possibly. Without the filter ize listed its hard to say for sure. while larger fish can handle more gph better on a filter oversized, smaller ones can get sucked up into the intake. A piece of sponge over the intake would stop that, but the best bet is probably to consider a filter rated for the ten itself rather then larger with smaller fish in mind.

Underground filters are all fine and dandy until they get clogged, then are a bad scene. So if you went that route, you have make sure to gravel vac and keep those vent slots open.

you can figure an inch of fish per gallon of water in the tank - a 10 gal tank can have 10" of fish in it 5 - 2" fish or 10 guppies. (or the 2- 2" fish and 4 to 5 guppies)

What kind of filter is it??? when i had a corner filter and baby fish would get sucked in , i would just put a little filter fiber inside the intake spot. THat could work for many kinds of filters....

just take a sample of water to your pet store in a baggie before u buy..put some netting around your strainer tube and a piece or 2 of slate rock to block or hide the tube..filter will still work and the fish shouldn't get sucked in..in a 10 gal u could do 6-8 guppies..

first if you take the other fish out you better off cleaning it because there might be some stuff that your other fish had and might make your guppy sick or something. 3 guppies is a good number to start with

Firstly please try out under-gravel filters they are much safer especially for small fish and keep the tank cleaner.

If you are keeping box type filters select the type with fine holes (or ones in which the inlet hole can be adjusted) or sponge type filters.

The water gets dirty normally due to over indulgence ie over feeding or use of wrong type of food like raw meet or egg yolk. for Guppies suggest flakes or dehydrated worms.

A 10 gallon tank can hold ten fish of 1" length ie One 1" fish per gallon, guppies can be kept in abundance.
