I myself live in Indonesia most of my time, been to Bali many times and its still nice even though its touristic but its a big island and there are many good places to stay.
You won't have to book before because there's plenty of places to stay.
This of course is a leftover from the bombs.
Stay away from the big masses and nothing will happen.
Asia is much safer than the states,if you or fivelight are from there.
I am originally from Europe and I find Asia much safer than Europe.
I hope you will enjoy Indonesia and its beautiful people.

Ananda Cottages Ubud.

Why?

1) Ubud is a great town - real Bali with great people
2) It is only 2 hours by jeep from the airport and makes the perfect base to visit the island
3) Kuta is for teenagers and Ubud id for families

4) Ananda cottages are all on the 2nd floor - you only have 2 full walls (in the corner where the bathroom is). The other 2 sides are lower (but safe) and overlook the rice fields. In the morning when the sun comes up you awaken to the sights and sounds of people working in the rice fields.

5) Ubud has a regular cultural show, monkey palace, good food

Inter Continental resort is a 5 star international resort at the Jimbaran that has a kids club at the hotel. It also has a large playground and jungle gym for the children. The hotel itself is kids friendly, right next to the beach, lots of pools.

i like conrad hotel at Tanjung Benoa beach, there's something like a kid club...u might want to chose beach-side hotel rather than those in the inner part of the island, like Ubud
