Can anyone give me some popular domestic violence heroines?

I need to do a report on a popular leader or American "pioneers"
I already know about Tina Turner I was just wondering if anyone knew any others.

The best pioneer to use as an example is Francine Hughes. She married young and was beaten by her husband throughout their marriage. She eventually broke free of him and got a divorce.

Unfortunately, she couldn't afford to get very far away from him and they ended up back in the same routine where he beat the crap out of her on a daily basis. She finally couldn't stand it anymore and set his bed on fire while he was sleeping. Thus inspiring the book and tv movie, "The Burning Bed" (Francine Hughes was played by Farrah Fawcett).

Francine Hughes was put on trial and exonerated due to the first ever case of "battered woman syndrome".

Tracey Thurman is one of the original heroines. Although she begged the Torrington police for help when her estranged husband was stalking her,they stood by and did next to nothing. Her throat was cut and she was partially paralyzed. She was the first wife to take on a police department and WIN! After that, police departments and the justice system all across the United States began to change how they handled domestic violence. They even made a movie about her called a Cry for Help and have interviewed her several times. I strongly recommend that you watch the video. She is a genuine heroine who did something to change the system for everyone. She had a landmark case.
