My family and I are thinking about moving to a house out in the country. One of our main concerns would be internet access. It's a very important part of our everyday lives and my mom would especially need it if she ever needed to work from home. I was just curious if anyone has any experience with this situation. If so, any information would be greatly appreciated. We need to know of service providers that we could go through (I'm assuming this would differ depending upon the area) as well as pricing and how much it could cost us. If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I'll edit a bit to answer it for you as soon as possible. Thank you so much.

If you have a direct line of site to the south, then Satellite service via Hughes - now sold via DirecTV (and called "Direct Way") is the only sure way. The minimum cost is about $99 a month

As far as providers go, you may be lucky if you have one!

Best thing is to go one of the many web sites (perhaps providers you are considering) and enter your new zip code (if you know it)
If they say yes - have them put it in writing.
If they say it's coming soon, write them off.

When you are house shopping, ask the neighbors if they have it, who from, if they know of any other providers, and the name of the phone company.

Although, legally, any company can provide DSL and your phone company has to allow them access, in reality - they won't bother with a very small market. I know.

Check with the phone company first though - you might be surprised. Even if you are not withing standard DSL range (2500' of a Central Office - which can be just a wiring building), they maybe able to boost the signal.

I was located slightly under 7 miles and was able to get 256K DSL. Now that they've got fiber running out by the "hard road" (paved) I can get 1500K DSL.

They've dropped the price and upped the minimum speeds.
$35 for 384K is the lowest (all speeds given are download speeds - you can assume upload is 1/2 that speed).
$55 for 1500K is the top.

Installation is $95 or $65 for self-install.
Usually once a year they will offer free installs or updates to speed.

They offer SDSL for business also (synchronous DSL - same speed up and down). Well a residence could get it too - but it's mainly for websites.
In one small town, they have WI-MAX.

Cable and DSL need to have lines laid to be able to reach out into the country; depending on what part of the country you live in, there may already be lines there. If there aren't any laid yet, the best thing to do is to contact the nearest cable or dsl provider and tell them the area you live in and that you want their service. Then you will at least help them know that there is a demand for it, so that they will try to get it installed out there.

Depending on where you live, some Satellite tv providers have a high speed Internet option. You would have to check with those companies for pricing though, but from what I understand it's fairly expensive. Hope that kinda gives you some idea :o)

They just have to be willing to run the wires. We used to live out in the country, on top of a big hill. It took awhile, but they eventually ran the wires out so we could get cable internet. Some ***** in the office tried to tell us it would be 500 bucks a foot for them to run it! Just call up the company that provides your cable and ask.

Check to see if there are any wireless providers in your neighborhood. That or a satellite receiver will be your only hope, because the phone companies won't put in a DSL unless there are a lot of people out there.

Two things come to mind here:

Cellular: If you have a decent cellular signal several of the major carriers have phone and/or computer adapters that come with their data plans to get internet access for your computer.

Satellite: DirecTV has a service called DirecWay or HughesNet as they call it now. Check it out at the link below.
