I'm taking a night class at a local college which is called "How to start up a small business." Most of the people in the class are in their 20's and 30's but there's a woman in the class who is in her mid to late 60's. Do you think its rude to ask her what she's doing there?
I tried starting up a conversation with her but she is not much of a talker. What do yall think her reason for being in that class is?

I'm not being ignorant or anything. I'm just curious to know why she's taking the class.

Why the h*** do you think that's too old? My guess is she's there with the idea of starting up a small business. Some people might say that people in their 20's and 30's should have already completed baccalaureate degrees and are too old to be taking some lame *** business start up class. People of all ages attend college for all kinds of different reasons. I knew a 98 year old who audited my English class just to keep her mind sharp. It's not rude to ask her about how she plans to use her education as long as you don't frame it in a way, like you did here, that makes you sound like a pric*

To learn how to start up a small business. What difference does it make how old she is. If she wants to start a small business, then she is taking a good first step to do that. Read up on the paintor Georgia O'keefe. If she had listened to people that said she was too old, the world would be denied some beautiful works of art! I think she would feel as offended as you would if she thought you were too young and inexperienced to be in that class. She brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and insight you don't possess yet just as you bring a fresh perspective and energy that she doesn't. That's called synergy.

Same as you, and YES, it would be rude if you asked her that. Shes probly not much of a talker cuz shes a bit uncomfy with all the young ppl in there. She already knows she stands out, but shes there to learn, that may be another reason why she doesnt talk much.
She has every right to be there, just as much as you. Maybe shes wanting to open her own business. Its not like shes 80. Gotta give the woman credit for still wanting to learn.

Maybe she lost a husband, has some extra money and wants to have a business of some kind. My grandparents are all in their late 70's and 80's and very healthy. She could run a successful business for the next fifteen years and why shouldn't she?

Maybe she wants to start up a small business. Maybe you could be more supportive instead of having a negative attitude. Anyway, she can take the class if she wants to.

A lot of people don't go into business until they are older. Case in point Colonel Stands(KFC) was well into his 60's before opening his first store. Not only that, when you stop trying to lean you might as well just die.

I dont think there's anything wrong with her age because anyone can learn how to put up a small business. You can ask her nicely like "good morning mam! may i know what kind of business you are planning to create?" something like that.

do you think you will ever know everything? I applaud this person for wanting to continue her education... I hope I still have enough of my faculties then to still learn new things... And is there an age when everything is free? perhaps she is still needing an income and as a small business owner her life will be better.

The same reason you are in the class. Start paying attention to your instructor and stop worrying about other people
