i never see them in the middle of a street....always at corner of two streets...

Because, there is a higher volume of cars passing by a corner than just in the middle of a street. Instead of just an x amount of cars passing down a street by the station, you have an x and y amount passing by. Did that make sense? Not that i think about it, there is a gas station by my house not on a corner. I guess it's because the nearest corner is already full of gas stations.
