Once I was walking down the beach with a friend and when I looked they were gone. I asked them later, where did you go? They said I never left you, instead I was carrying you, you just didn't know it. Remember that you are never alone. Even when there is noone by your side.

You don't need just one friend to carry you through your troubles. Think of it more like a mosh pit...

You are talking about "Footprints"
Footprints in the Sand
One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.
Sometimes there were two sets of footprints,
other times there were one set of footprints.
This bothered me because I noticed
that during the low periods of my life,
when I was suffering from
anguish, sorrow or defeat,
I could see only one set of footprints.
So I said to the Lord,
“You promised me Lord,
that if I followed you,
you would walk with me always.
But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life
there have only been one set of footprints in the sand.
Why, when I needed you most, you have not been there for me?”
The Lord replied,
“The times when you have seen only one set of footprints in the sand,
is when I carried you.”

Ah, you do know that what you are describing is a poem about God? A man asks says to God that he see's God's footprints beside him as he walks through life, but he asks God why he doesn't see God's footsteps when he is going through a terrible time in life. God's answer is that during those terrible times, there is only one set of footprints because that is when God is carrying him. The poem is called "Footprints" and it's available everywhere.
