350Z Driver:
The officer gave you good advice. In California you can request "Traffic School" by either calling the courthouse at the number on the back of your citation, or by personally appearing in court, whichever your court requires. San Jose is a pretty big city so I think you can do it over the phone. The court will send / give you a list of approved schools you can use to fulfill this requirement. There is a small fee to attend the school. If you actually go to a class, DON'T be late, if you are you won't be allowed to attend, and you forfeit the fee. If you go "on line" choose your answers very carefully . Once you have completed the course and received your certificate, send / file it with the court , they may or may not access you a fine to cover court costs, and the case will be dismissed, Keeps your CLEAN record CLEAN.

It will probably cost the same either way. In Florida, the fine is reduced if you take the traffic school option. Do the traffic school, so you avoid points on your license. Otherwise, your insurance payments will go up.
