94 grand am 126000 miles. automatic trans. sometimes, after a stop usually high speed..above 45, the trans goes into neutral and wont move, tried shifting through the gears, and park and back, usually alittle rpm from the motor, and it drops into gear and goes...trans dont slip at all. I know it needs a filter and fluid change, but im selling the car.. was gonna ask 1000 but, now that the trans is acting up, do I spend the time doing the filter and fluid, or is it a more serious problem?? Ive done alot of reading in forums half say its a servo, half say its a Cracks in the forward clutch piston ? what ever that is..
I have a auto auction I can dump the car at but ill loose about 600 vs selling it running. whats your opinion?

Add some transseal or a good additive to help lubricate the valve body...my brother swears by a cap full of brake fluid in this case, but I'm not a big fan of that. Anyway, just do what it takes. Make sure it's full of tranny fluid. Filters are not very expensive. 20 bucks will get the stuff you need to change the filter and fluid. Good luck.

#1 chech your trans fluid, the 94 grand am should still have a dipstick like your oil does. start the car, move the gear shift through all the gears (park reverse neutral drive overdrive 321 depending on what trans you have, then with the engine still running pull the dipstick, wipe it off, put it back in, pull it again and check to see it is on the full line, if not add dexron III to it until it reads full (use a funnel and add it in the same tube as the dipstick lives in) this should solve the problem, if not the next step is fluid and filter, if that doesn't fix it its overhaul time

i own a repair shop, and it may have some internal problems, but if you,ll go ahead and change the fluid in it it will help the fluid circulate a little better and it will make it not as bad as it is right now, i had one last week that was doing that, and after a fluid and filter change it done real good ,,it was good enough to sell, and the owner sold it for 2 grand so i t might Be worth a try for you to do this it cant hurt it none, that's for sure, good luck,i hope this help,s.

Yes do the filter and gasket change. And have the mechanic that does the servive add a quart of Lucas transmission fluid treatment. That stuff works miracles
