Studies show that as long as you quit by the end of the first tri-mester that you will not harm the baby, cut back slowely until you only smoke about 2 a day and then chew a lot of gum, it helps, also what I know my friend did is everytime she lit up she imagined the baby smoking, it helped her quit

I know what your going through! Firstly don;t listen to anyone that tells you that you will have disfigured, mentally handicapped, or deformed child. Smoking whilst pregnant isn't the best thing you can do for your baby and I know you know that. You do increase the risks of having a not so healthy baby.
It is better for you and the baby to quit in the first trimester.. if you quit later on you will submit you and the baby to ALOT of stress on your body.
Another real problem with smoking comes after the baby is born and if you smoke in the house you do increase the chances of SIDS... While you are pregnant you have a placenta that is Filtering EVERYTHING.... but once you have the baby you dont have this filtering organ.
I'm a smoker and i cut back dramatically.... but i am worried none the less... Hopefully you can kick it early on and not let it stress you out too much! Good Luck!

Congratulations!

I don't smoke, but I've seen my mom and dad try to stop smoking over and over and over again. It seemed like they were going through a nightmare.

Mom did smoke when she was pregnant with me. She tried very, very hard to stop. Unfortunately, she began eating everything in sight. This was during the first trimester so it was due primarily to stopping smoking. Her weight increased so fast that the doctor put her on weekly visits to monitor her weight and nearly put her the hospital. She eventually decided (with the doctor's input) that she was putting herself (and me) in more danger by withdrawal overeating and stress than the smoking was doing.

I'm only writing this to recommend you consult your doctor rather than go it alone. Doctors have much better methods and aids for quitting smoking than they did in my mom's time, and he may have some ideas about how to suppress withdrawal overeating which can be as real a danger to you and your baby as smoking.

(As an aside, I looked like a healthy baby girl at 6 lbs 10 ozs when I was born. I have not had any learning disabilities and graduated from college. I was not a sickly child. Smoking does increase the risks of miscarriage, low birthweight, complications, allergies, and SIDS. However, an increased risk is NOT a guarantee. Don't let some of the comments scare you to death.)

Good Luck!

The fact that you are asking this question tell us that you care about your baby and you know the harm it can do to the infant.
Congratulation on your pregnancy and wanting to do what is best for your baby. You are already making good choices as a mom.
I have never smoked but my children's grandparents did and they quit when they found out they were going to be grand parents because of the SIDS risk. My best friend also smoke and she quit with her 1st. They all did hypno-therapy this would be very safe for baby and my friend said it helped with labor as well. If this isn't the right path for you just try cutting back and talk with your Dr. maybe some of the stop smoking meds. are safe in pregnancy. Good Luck and I applaud your efforts.

Think of all the problems you could have with your baby health and your health. It will cause birth defects in you baby. Just thinking about that should give you the ability to stop. When I found out i just though the smokes away and have not had a one. I'm 26 weeks and everything is going good. Just think about your baby. Me having morning sickness also help because the smell of smoke was so bad maybe that mite help you too.

hi there, well i hope u dont get any bad replies to this either, ive had two kids that have turned out tottally normal are perfactly healthy to, and i smoked the entire way thru both my pregnancy's. im not telling you to continue smoking but the advice to me from my doctor at the time was just try to cut down as much as you can, when i first found i was compelled to smoke more and i dont really know why, maybe it was stress, i hope that you do manage to quit to but being a smoker i sympathise with you, ive tried giving up b4 and failed everytime, so i know how hard it is 4 you but hang in there and good luck to you and your baby.

I was a smoker when I found out I was pregnant... I quit cold turkey. In fact, I cut back even before I found out b/c the smoke was making me sick. However, it was still hard to quit when the people at work were going out for "smoke breaks" and my husband would go outside to smoke in the evenings. If I ever felt a craving, i just pictured a little baby with all it's ten fingers and ten toes inside my belly. I was his mommy, and I had to start protecting him, even before I knew him. If you need help, call a hotline, but please don't pick up that cigarette!

I had a friend that was pregnant and a smoker. Think about that baby that is growing inside of you everytime you want to light up. Find someone, a friend or family member, to tell. Try the patch, and have all of your friends, family members, even your work place put signs up that will not allow you to smoke. put one in your vehicle if you have to. It's not going to be easy, just look for support from someone and i'm sure you can stop.

Read all the baby magazines that tell you all the harm you are doing to the baby and yourself. You could try a Women's free stop smoking program. I know a local hospital offers Target gift cards to Pregnant women that stop smoking while in this program. When you visit your doctor he can help too. Been there and now my beautiful little 9month old boy is MY LIFE!

What my OB told me was to quit smoking by cutting back over 2 weeks, if you quit cold turkey it will cause a lot of stress on you and the baby. if you smoke a pack a day cut 5 a day etc etc etc, this works! Good luck and congrats!
