engineers have jokingly said they have proof bees cannot fly. It seems that such heavy insects with a short wing beatshould not be able to generate enough lift.

They "tread" air, and they deform their bodies with each stroke to generate the lift.

Years ago, the engineers you allude to weren't joking - they did not know about vortexes.

Then again, the bumble bees didn't know about vortexes either - and they just continued to fly around anyways.
