IN the original show gold shirts were captains adn red shirts were engineering and security. Then in Next Generation this switches. Was any excuse ever given?

Star Trek's origional series{Excluding 1st pilot with Jeffery Hunter as Capt. Christopher Pike where the uniforms hadn't been made a big part of the show.} the uniform colors for the first 2 seasons were:
Command & Support staff wore-- GOLD.
Science Personal wore--BLUE.
Security (Awat teams usually) wore--RED thus coining the term Redshirts because these persons most always ended up killed off in the episode.
The 3rd season brought about some changes in the uniforms. The Command staff still wore GOLD & the Science personal still wore BLUE, but now RED was worn by the Security, as well as the Support staff.
In Star Trek TNG the uniform colors were:
Command & Navigation--Wine RED.
Medical Corps & Science--NAVY BLUE.
Support staff--GOLD.
Security & Engineering--MUSTARD YELLOW. This brings me to a tidbit of info for you all....Data{Bret Spinner} was actually a science officer & was suppose to wear BLUE, but he wore the color of the engineering & security { Yellow} because the creator of S./Trk.[Gene Roddenberry} didn't like how blue looked on Data because of his pale color, so they put him in a yellow uniform mostly, when not in the Command Post where he wore the Wine Red uniform & had him involved with engineering/security so fans wouldn't wonder why a science officer was not wearing the color of a science officer.( Smart move on their part I guess eh?)
In all Star Trek series from 1st one to Enterprise with Scott Baculla the uniform of the Admirals of Starfleet(All admirals--no matter what their rank }wore a uniform that resembles the current uniform of the US Air Force "Class A" uniform. Only the applets on them distinquished their rank.
A blue jacket, white shirt & tie. Pants for men & a skirt for women.
P.S. The blue in this uniform is darker than the blue in the Duty Jumpsuit used in the Star Trek Enterprise series.

It used to be that gold meant navigation, blue meant science, and red meant military. If you paid attention Sulu and Checkoff also wore gold. Spock, and Bones wore Blue. Scotty and the vast majority of people killed wore red.

Here is where your confusion comes from. Ryker and Picard started out in the military and not in navigation. Data and Wesley started out in navigation and wore the gold. They pretty much removed the scientific crew but Crusher and sometimes Troy wore the blue.

And from a military standpoint uniforms are supposed to be uniform. If you are on a military/diplomatic mission red should be the uniform. If it were a scientific mission then blue and exploration missions should be gold. Keep your eye on the away team.

The same reasons used in todays military. They just wanted to change the uniforms.

It would probably be some Intergalactic treaty or something as the "official" excuse on the show.
