A really interesting one is Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America. It is a nonfiction book written from the perspective of a European exploring the US in the 1830s.

What I would do in your shoes is go to the Library of Congress' website at: loc.gov and post your question on their query site. You will probably receive more information than you can possibly use, but at the same time find some interesting material with which you can formulate any plans you have now.
