The Autobiography of Malcolm X.
Malcolm X spent most of his life fighting for equal rights for African Americans and was murdered in 1965.
The autobiography was actually written by Alex Haley based on extensive interviews Haley conducted with Malcolm X. Malcolm X approved every chapter after it was written.
A New York Times reviewer wrote “No man has better expressed his people’s trapped anguish.”

Without knowing what your interest are I'll just name a few anyway. I prefer biographies from people we've never heard of, I believe they are a more honest account than those of famous people.
Slave by Mende Nazer
About a girl who grew up in the Nuba Mountains in Sudan. Kidnapped by Arab slave traders and sold into modern day slavery. Great read.
Sickened by Julie Gregory

Don't let her see me Cry - Helen Barnacle

The lily theatre - Lulu Wang
About a young girl growing up through Mao's china and hte chinese revolution, re-education camps etc.
Married to a Bedouin - Margourite van Geldermalsen

Simon Bolivar (1783-1830) - Liberated Latin America from the Spanish Empire. General, political philosopher and incorrigible womanizer.
I can't think of anyone in history who has been defeated so many times but would come back and never falter in his faith until he reached his goal. Makes Arnold Schwarzenegger look like a wimp.

'An Imperfect God' by Wiencek (I think that's how you spell it) is a great read. It's about George Washington and his relation to slavery and the different attitudes about slavery at the time of the revolution and Washington's life. It's very interesting and I was able to breeze through it no problem- and I happen to hate biographies.

In order to answer this question, I think you need to state in what you have interests and what your reading level is...are you a teen, young adult; do you like mechanics or drama or sports or world history? Do you like being challenged in your reading or do you like to read fast paced easy reading? I started reading history by reading James Mitchner and autobiographies by reading about Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. Now I read only history and autobiographies and maybe an occasional historical epic.

Until we Meet Again by Michael Korenblit and Kathleen Janger.
It is the story of Michael's parents, Meyer and Manya. They were teenagers during WWII. They were both Polish Jews and it is their amazing story of love and survival. Fantastic.
