I have installed a couple of AC units in houses. For a house about 1700 square feet the furnace and AC with all ductwork was installed for under $4000.

It depends a lot on the quality of the equipment you get prices on the units can range from $500-$3000 in the US. Call some reputable HVAC contractors to do a heat load calculation of your house so they can tell you what size equipment you need and give you an estamate of how much it will cost to install.
I do HVAC as a profession, you cant guess the prices of a job you have to do load calculations to get propersized duct and the proper size a/c and heating. It will be expesive but if you invest in high efficient equipment 90% or better the money you save in heating and cooling cost will pay for it after a couple years.

Our house is about 1300 sqft. We put in a new indoor and outdoor unit. It cost $2,500.00--we did have the duct work.--- We had a friend of friend do it on the side or it would have cost twice that. Check several companies and get several quotes.

We almost had it done when we had a new furnace installed but we were told we need all new duct work because ours was too small and outdated. We couldnot afford it at that time so we have window air conditioners instead. Oh well, maybe someday.

When your dealing with refrigerant, your best to work with a professional HVAC contractor.
Get 3 quotes, and at least 3 references from each quote.
Throw out the low and high and go with the middle guy if his references check out.
Good Luck
