The inexpensive way to celebrate your girl's 16th birthday party is not invite anybody. Take advantage of the situation to have the family do things TOGETHER without having to buy extra stuff- except, for some special gift, no more than worth one week's allowance.

For instance, if you have a piano or any musical devices already, have the father "make a fool" of himself by playing the piano with sporadic stops to say, "this is dedicated to you, happy birthday to you" and resume playing. It will also help if the father is clowning around while playing. In case of a casette or CD player, one can start and stop the music. Meanwhile, the mother can pamper her daughter by putting on her daughter make-up, comb her hair, or braid her hair or just massage her hair. This alone can take hours.

I understand that at the least, you have to spend some money for cake and some food. Or, enjoin your daughter to bake a cake with you and she gets to write the greetings on top of the cake. Advise her to write on the cake her birthday wish. (Hopefully you can meet it with the budget restriction).

And for the finale, surprise your daughter that all the money you saved in celebrating her birthday is her "BDAY College Account".
There is nothing more powerful than a lesson like this to teach your emerging adult child, fiscal responsibility.

You will be surprised how much more closer you will be to your daughter. However, if your daughter does not appreciate this "unusual" gesture of celebrating her birthday, then I am sorry to say, you have just raised a very "materialistic" child. And who do you think you will blame later?

Do not consider this as "too square" because there's nothing more that brings families together than just enjoying yourselves not gifts.

Hi Sportsrli,
Are you the Mom giving the party? or the 16 year old having the party?
If Mom invite some of her friends over for a surprise birthday with slumber party depends, maybe have friends bring CD's, (shhh it's a secret)! Some cheapo camera's(disposible work gr8 for parties. Get out the stereo-vinyl records (maybe b4 your time) CD's, cassettes. Brushes, make-up(eye shadow, liner, lipstick.blush, nail polish, creams etc.) mud masks, foot ( like peppermint foot mask)-for pedicures. Have hot dogs, something easy or make sloppy joes, pop, munchie foods of course the cake or cup cakes with figurines-decorated with small records, small telephones, girl figurerines,( yes they eat almost anything) balloons-helium always fun to suck later (oops maybe not but always fun to talk like a chipmunk). Good luck & have fun that's what counts!

take a room and make it into a disco.. you can get those disco lights pretty cheap at walmart...

get a stereo and some cds.........

have a dance......

then have a fortune teller. This was big when I was a teenager..

You find a corner or another room... and you set up a table and two chairs.. you get a glass ball or bowling ball...

then you have someone dress up like a gypsy.. ( an older sister or someone) and have her read each of your friends fortune, one at a time....
