I feel that it is my right as a Southern person to fly the rebel flag. To me it means History and if people read their History they marched into battle with the stard and bars flag so that should be the flag they have a problem with. Not the Rebel Flag it is our heritage. It is like asking america to get ride of the american flag because it is racial to Mexicans and people from other countries. I mean think about it. What if someone asked you to take down your nascar flag cause they did not like it' or they asked you to take down your christian flag because they are baptist. When are people ever gonna learn. The Rebel flag just means history now people. THe north won and we Southerners are aware of that but we are not gonna give up out heritage with out a fight.....

There are more meaning than one to any item you choose. The rebel flag may mean southern history to you, but to some, it means racism. The southern history did have heavy influence of racial element. Which one the flag represents is really up to the one flying it.

Yes, you have the rights to fly it. No, you are not required to restrain yourself because someone else doesn't like it.

Other peple also has the right to complain, ie. express their opinion on your actions. You can't stop it for the same reason they can't stop you.

Also consider, just because you have the right, that doesn't automatically mean you should, or is a good idea. You might want to consider others feelings toward such sensitive issues.

We all make choices and choices we make define our characters. It's all up to you.

A lot of people don't know what the stars or the colors on the even stand for. To me it is a part of our southern history but because someone was offended by it and had a good lawyer they chose to remove it from the state flags of some states.they start with the Confederate Battle flag and first thing you know because it is Red White and Blue it might offend someone. Then What's next WELLMAKE ME TAKE MINE DOWN I fly it every Day

I grew up in the south and by no means do I agree with racism. I don't personally feel the rebel flag is a racist statement, though I can see how others view it that way. My favorite bumper sticker regarding this topic is the one with the stars and bars for the background with 'heritage not hate' on it. However, out of courtesy/respect to those who do feel it is a racist statement, I personally do not have one

In my opinion it reminds us of both, but to each his own. If you decide you are going to fly the rebel flag as a part of your heritage, you should also be aware that there are people who are going to associate it with racism. That's just the way it ended up being.

Like lots of things, it depends.

For many African-Americans, it says "That flag was used by people who enslaved us". They find it offense. I don't think it is difficult to understand their feelings.

Some southerners do believe it represents their history and has nothing to do with race. Many see it as a connection to a great, great, great grandfather and the sacrifices southerners made during the war.

My opinion? Free speech trumps people's feelings but remember that works both ways when a group does something you find offensive.

The rebel flag was the battle flag of the confederate army. It was not the national flag of the confederate states of america. If you are proud of the heritage of the confederate army than you should fly it.

There are a lot of things I like about the traditional southern way, but the romanticized bits of the good ol' days were, alas, fundamentally based on a slave-driven economy. So celebrating that flag (with any thought at all) means accepting the forces which made it possible, which is why it is offensive.

A lot of brave people died under that banner and very few of them were slave owners. It only became a symbol of racism when Nathan Bedford Forrest used it in conjunction with the hoods in the Ku Klux Klan. Don't forget that Robert E. Lee fought under that flag. Unfortunately, it really has become a symbol of racism so it's lost it's honor.

For some reason (in Canada, anyway) the "Rebel Flag" is a symbol of racism.
(I guess it doesn't help that the KKK and Skinheads wave it around everywhere they go.)
If you wanna reclaim your flag and clear your names, you're gonna have to bytch-slap them and tell them to leave your flag alone.
