I'm planning on going to Cozumel soon and I would like to check out some Mayan ruins on the mainland (day trip) and I was wondering if I should book a tour before hand or try to work it out once I got there?
Also, if you could give me the name and location of the best Tequila bar in Cozumel, I would appreciate it.

If you do it yourself, how do you get to the ruins, cab, bus? Do the tours offer anything other than the information I already got from Discovery Channel? How much are the tours compared to doing it yourself? How hard is it to get back to the island from the ruins after the trip?

Depends on you - do you speak Spanish? Many times there are guides available on site for a small sum that will take you are ound and explain things - there are ruins on Cozumel Island, but I assume you mean the ones on the main land. In the long run, a tour would probably be cheaper than a cab on your own. There is no trouble working out tours once you get to the island - plenty of folks willing to help connected to hotels and airport - There are several ruins to see, even some in Cancun - so you need to decid on what you want to see first.

I did that once, will never do again book you're tour with the hotel, the transport is reliable and safer, they have small store front that sell tours cheap BUT, it will come out to be expensive, bedt place is in Playa Del Carmen, great food and service, don't forget the bug spray at the ruins there are alot of mosquitos all day and night. when in cozumel go to this out of the way bar behind, marketa place you will find senor frogs the best biggest margaritas in the whole place. tour calle Hotelera from one end to the other it is awsome.

You can grab a bus and go to Tulum. it is not expensive. Taxis are a little bit pricier. You will have to pay for entrance fee, bus ride, etc. If you rent a car, please know the road laws. There are a LOT of accidents involving turists in the freeway.
Remember to wear ONLY biodegradable sunscreen or mosquito repellent.
Another day trip is to Coba, it is about 2 hours away from Playa del Carmen, a tour will be the best to go.

go yourself you can take pictures stay as long as you want. you can't if you go with a tour group. I went to Cozumel and had an all inclusive package it was wonderful!!!! swimming with the dolphins was the best but a little pricy.
