In the wild, snappers are almost totally carnivorous- mostly fish, some frogs and crayfish, and occasionally whatever else they can get.

In captivity, the best food is live feeder fish, with occasional crayfish, etc.

If you cannot do live fish, try things like:
- Frozen/thawed fish, either pet shop feeder fish or from the gorcery store (avoid 'fatty' or greasy fishes)
- 'Meaty' fish foods, like trout chow
- Canned fish- but be aware that most of this will foul the water and is not great for the turtle
- Smoked/dried fish, such as from Asian markets

DO NOT feed:
- Lettuce or veggies- NOT good snapper food, and light green head lettuce is not good for ANY reptile.
- Hamburger- too fatty and poor calcium/phosphorous ratio
- Leftovers or most other meats. Some chicken (cooked) and organ meat is OK in moderation.

Never feed a turtle raw hamburger, it can cause e coli, worms, parasites and make the water dirty stinky and gross.
Snappers love to eat fish, earth worms, frogs, chicken hearts, and turtle pellets.

Snapping turtles are reptilian carnivores. They spend a great deal of time at the bottom of a lake waiting for prey to swim. They will eat fish, frogs and minnows.

Almost anyhting they can get into their mouth. Fish, birds, small animals, crayfish, plants and other turtles are on the dinner plate for a snapper.

Snapping turtles will eat nearly anything that they can get their jaws around. They feed on carrion, invertebrates, fish, birds, small mammals, amphibians, and a surprisingly large amount of aquatic vegetation.
