My church often help homeless shelters and feeds homeless people. I used to think that homeless people were either dirty and mentally ill. But one time when I feed the homeless for Thanksgiving. I saw intelligent people, families, kids and all of kinds of people living in the shelter. I've heard that for a lot of people in the U.S. that if they take a major financial blow they could loose everything and be homeless. There needs to be more shelters and governmental assistance. The price of living is also very high especially where I live in NY, so affordable housing makes a huge difference.

Bring some 4-5 people from the street to live with you. Gee, just kidding. There's not much one can do as an individual. Its the government's responsibility. I dont know how its done in your country but in India, we have a 'Slum Clearance Board'. You notify them and then they would initiate projects to build homes for the homeless. Not that the Govt. doesnt already know, but every little bit adds pressure.

I would do anything I can to help. I help at soup kitchens by donating food and time. I donate blankets and coats. I really feel that I could do more and should do more. I'm glad you asked this question! Hopefully, I can get some other ideas through the answers.

Increase education, increase welfare for people who are actively seeking employment, increase funding for charitable organizations trying to help the homeless find jobs and places to stay.

most of the homeless are mentally ill and have exhausted the state's welfare for treatment. there is no remedy for the homeless. its sad but true. the only thing the government can do is make the families pay for the institutionalization.
