what is the explanation of a red moon?

when the moon is low on the horizon the light passes through more of the earths atmosphere.
that difuses the blue end of the spectrum, shifting the color to the red end. just like the sunset

Same as a red sun at sunset. At low angles to the earth, the light reflected off the moon passes through a greater thickness of the earth's atmosphere. The atmosphere filters out the shorter wavelengths of light, leaving only the longer (red) wavelengths for us to see.

"Red Moon" is one of the names of the full moon in August.
