What did you think of the place, and what to do and not to do?

Yes. The place is very hot weather wise, not much to do there. A couple of malls that are mediocre at best. Can't really recommend that place.

Surabaya as a city is not spectacular, there a more interesting cities on Java or elsewhere in Indonesia.
But the good things of Surabaya are:
- easy trip to Mount Bromo (stairway to heaven)
- harbor for the ferry to Madura Island (north)
I felt really sorry for those poor creatures in the Surabaya Zoo....

I'm from Surabaya.... It's hot... similar 2 Jakarta.... Not many things 2 see.... But exellent place 4 shopping...
Hmmm, a lot of departmen store in there.... Try Tunjungan Plaza, Galaxy Mall, or PTC.... Or u can go to Pasar Atom & buy pirated DVDs in very good quality&price...
Watch ur wallet&properties carefully...!!! Many pickpockets & badguys....
If u like, u can go to DOLLY.... very famous prostitution area in Surabaya....^^

I went to Surabaya once but only to the railway station and only saw from the train. It just looked like any other Indonesian big city. I would like to go again and see more.

Surabaya is a nice city but have a hot weather.They have a lot of delicious food, but if someone there offer you "KUPANG" don't eat that
KUPANG is kind of oyster but to catch them they use man's pup...Yucccccckkkkksssss

Yes, regularly, I go there once a three months. That's right, the weather is hot, crowded and humid.
The zoo is Ok, but the food is the most I like such fried duck, soto, rawon, kupang and pecel madiun
Many hotels are cozy, my favourite one is Santika coz the officers are very friendly and warm

it's hot..and i dont think there's much to see..unless you go to Malang, a town near Surabaya

well the zoo is very intresting ,they have the komodo dragon on display plus other intresting spiecies the town is good for shopping at the mall its a crowded town not a place I would reccomend for tourist nothing to really see or do there

Had great fun.
Must do - horse ride up mt Bromo for sunrise.
Good night clubs (the odd tranvestite so be careful who you talk to).
Told not to go to clubs with strangers - but we didn't have any problems.
Downside - the bus driver drive like lunatics.
