Hegel was deep in to logic. His idea was DIALECTICAL SPIRITUALISM ! He was not a materialist, it was Karl Marx who combined Hegel's Dialectical method and materialism. Hegel was more in to the realm of abstract !

To Hegel the physical world is the manifestation of the "universal idea"--(This absolute idea he calls by several names like "absolute idea", "universal spirit", "Geist", "volk Geist". See, it is this stress on an abstract idea which makes his theory more to the spiritual side). He believed that
this idea/spirit is constantly in search of perfection and will attain reality only when it becomes perfect ! (confusing ?)

See it this way. Every thing has it's own defects. So the good part of it (the thesis) conflicts with the bad/imperfect part (the anti thesis). This results in the formation of a new being (the synthesis). But this new synthesis overtime becomes imperfect and forms the new thesis and antithesis, then the new synthesis. This process goes own until the being is PERFECT! In other words it attain SELF REALISATION !

This propensity for self realisation is there in all beings ! This is the lynch pin of his Dialectical Spiritualism !

I know it was boring but this is what I can do !
