A tessellation is like a repeated image. To make one, take a square, cut a portion out of the left side (start and end the one cut on the left side), and glue it to the right side. Same for the top. Now, make the same cut on 3 more squares. These'll fit together nicely. Many more make a tessellation.

The best tessellator (is that even a word?) that I know of is M.C. Escher. He doesn't just do the square type of tessellation either. He does some gradual stuff--like the fish and birds, and some others like squares and cities. Really neat stuff here.
