why all the contact lists in messengers (msn,yahoo,icq,whatever) are private?

what is so secret about our contact lists? why are we hiding them from other people? why are they not public so that everybody can see who we have in our lists? i think we should at least have optional public lists,shouldnt we?

yeah i agree, we should have public contact lists as well
