If the kiln reaches the right temperature -that depending on the type of clay - then the pottery is ready. If the temperature is higher than the clay specifications it burns ,melts etc.If it is lower it is brittle.
As for raising the temperature the longer it takes ,the harder the pottery becomes.
I need extra strong pottery so i fire:
0-100c 3 hours -it prevents breaking.
100-300c 2 hours
300-600c 2 hours
10 min. ironing
600-1290c as long as the kiln needs.
5 min. ironing
(Temp. in Celsius not Fahrenheit)
You open the kiln when the temp.drops at 80c

It isn't burned. It's "fired" and it takes about 12 hours. Put it in the kiln, turn it on and come back 24 hours later. Your pottery is fired and cooled by then.
