A quick way would be to take the 9th root of the 5 Billion something number.
5,474,115,504^(1/9) = 12.07910855
Then Multiply this number x 9 (because 9 students)
12.07910855 x 9 = 108.7119769.

Another way to do it is to make a list of nine numbers on an Excel spreadsheet. SInce students from 6 thru 8 grades are somewhere between 11 and 14, Plug in numbers in the 9 cells until the multiplication equals your 5 billion number.
I started with 11 nine times and got 2,357,947,691.
Then I plugged in a few 12's until I went over, then started substituting 13's and 11's until I hit the 5 billion number.

So I got 13;13;11;13;11;13;12;12; 11

And the summation total was 109, pretty close to my quick math above.

The sum is 109. How in the world did I figure this out?
First, the ages of the students are either 11, 12, or 13.
When you multiply their ages together you get a number which
ends in 4. When you multiply any number by 11 the result ends in the same digit as the original number. To have that big number end in four we could either have 1 13yr, 3 12's and 5
11's, 1 12, 3 13's and 5 11's,
or 2 12's 4 13's and 3 11's.
Notice that if you multiply the final digits of all of these scenarios, the result always ends in 4.
If you have a good calculator you can just plug in the numbers
and see which combination works.
I only have the calculator on my cell phone so I had to do half of it by hand, but that works too.
In the end you end up with :

3- 11 year olds
2--12 year olds and
4--13 year olds.

Add them up and you get 109.
