Wear white shirt and pants. Find lots of objects such as small cars, small animals, small anything and attach each to a sturdy thread a few inches long (securely). Sew the end of the thread (obviously, the end one without the object attached to it) to your white clothes. It looks strange and the kids will wonder, what the heck? When they question what it it, spin around a few times in a circle real fast, and tell them you are a tornado! The more objects you attach, the better the effect is.

Dress up as your district high school's mascot, unless it happens to be the Bikini Models ;D

Pirate
Vest, old white shirt, tattered thrift store pants (pre-tattered or self-tattered, whatever), chunky belt, eyepatch, scarf... use your imagination!

Panther, Cheetah, etc.
Cats are really easy to do... pick up a five dollar pair of kitty ears at the costume store, get a patterned or black jacket and pants from the thrift store, and draw on whiskers with eye-liner. Meow!

Viking
A horned hat, hair in braids and a shiny or white tank top with a brown or black cape (as in an over-the-shoulders one, not a behind-the-back-one... something that you would wear in bad weather!)

Horse (of course of course)
A yarn mane and tail over a sweatsuit. Put your hair into small buns on your head. Wear shiny black shoes and, when you can, gloves. Since you are a school teacher, you may wish to eschew the gloves.

Native American
An old fringed leather jacket and pants. On the other hand, a BIG paper bag can be cut into a vest and decorated with markers. Not a bad project for your kids, too! A feather in a leather headband completes the look.

Any more ideas that you need?

Why not pick a time period and go with that? You could even sneak in a lesson that way and you can often rent decent historical costumes. Your local theater might have something from a play they would let you borrow, as well.

Or, on the other hand- you could dress up as something your kids are into right now- like a video game character from a current game. They might be gratified that you pay attention to what they like.

Be a gypsy! Big hoop earrings, peasant blouse, lots of bangle bracelets and necklaces, three tiered skirt, lots of makeup. You could even tell fortunes through palm reading!

Also, you could choose a historical character and turn it into a history lesson (ie, Pilgrim and the Witch Trials; Marie Antoinette and the French Revolution; Anne Boleyn and the creation of the Protestant Church; Harriet Tubman and Slavery, etc.). Have fun.

I think it would be really funny if you dressed up as someone else in the school that everyone knows, like the principal, or Miss Murry the music teacher, or Senor Sanchez the Spanish teacher, etc.
It is fun to try to capture the style of just a normal everyday person you all know (and love) and then to be recognizable as them.

A character from a book the kids have read lately, or movie they've seen in connection with what you're currently studying - Harry Potter, Legolas, the teacher from the "Magic School Bus"...

Oh... Oh... I know... Pick me... Pick me!

You could dress up like an apple, a historical ruler and be a "ruler", get some stuffed puppy dogs from the dollar store glue them on a long black coat and be Cruella Deville or Minerva from Harry Potter. Good luck with whatever you decide. My stepson's school doesn't participate in Halloween anymore, it really bums me out!!! Happy haunting!

what about a cleaning lady or an alien. My mom did the cleaning lady bit and scared me half to death because she pretended like she didn't know who I was or why I was at the house (of course I was 5 at the time) but it was still great fun. Alien wouldn't be to hard to do and then you can read the Bailey school kids book about Aliens (I can't remember the title.)

How about Dorothy from Wizard of Oz?
You can also dress up as a Disney character, such as Cinderella or Snow White. How about a character from Scooby Doo, a cowgirl, or as a gothic vampiress.
