San Francisco and San Jose lead the nation in a study of pay rates released on Friday.

The Bay Area cities have the biggest variation from the national median in pay, according to the 2006 Geographic Salary Differentials study from Mercer Human Resource Consulting.

Mercer compared local pay rates for more than 200 cities to national medians at different pay levels. According to the findings, geographic pay variations are less pronounced, but still evident, at higher pay levels.

For a job with a median national salary of $30,000, San Francisco was 25.6 percent above the median at $37,680 and San Jose came in second at $37,230 or 24.1 percent above the median. Next were New York (+22.4%), Los Angeles (+12.6%), and Seattle (+11.7%).

Pay can vary by more than 32 percentage points for the same job depending on where it's located, from a low in Birmingham to a second-highest in San Jose, according to a study released Friday.

For a job with a median salary of $60,000 nationally, for example, pay varies from a low of $55,080 (-8.2 percent) in Baton Rouge, La. to $72,000 (+20 percent) in San Jose.

Pay variations by geography are even noted at $90,000, the study said. Among the cities included in the study, this level of job paid $102,060 in New York and $104,040 in San Jose. At the low end in this category are Little Rock, Ark. ($84,510), and Omaha, Neb. ($86,580).
