By different types, I suspect you are referring to permanent magnets and electro magnets - or, perhaps you mean the north pole vs. the south pole of a magnet.

An electro magnet aligns the electrons in a piece of iron when it is wrapped with a coil of wire and an electric current is passed through the wire. This principle is used in large crane magnets in metal salvage yards. It is also used on a smaller scale in solenoids and loud speakers. These magnets can be turned on and off with the electric current.

Permanent magnets, on the other hand, have their electrons all aligned "permanently" and a material (alnico, a mixture of aluminum, nickel and cobolt, for instance) which has the characteristic of holding the magnetism for very long periods once they are magnetized.

All magnets have a north and south pole - with like poles that repel and unlike poles that attract.
