The Sumerians were civilized at a much earlier date than Palestine was. All of Western culture is indebted to the Sumerians, who invented a true system of writing (unlike the hieroglyphics of Egypt, which rely on pictures), a very early legal system, the first empire, and mathematical concepts like dividing the circle by 360 degrees. They also paid a lot of attention to astronomy, and invented the art of astrology. They left us the first epic poem (Gilgamesh, which is well worth reading). They were a smart people.
