Ok... well, the offense gets 4 tries to go 10 yards. Each try is called a "down." It always starts with "1st and 10" which means 1st try 10 yards to go. For example, if the offense moves 3 yards on "1st and 10", it would then be 2nd and 7 because it's their 2nd try and they have 7 yards left to go. If the offense doesn't make move a total of 10 yards in 4 tries, it is turned over to the other team (called a "turnover on downs"). If they don't get it in 3 tries, they will usually punt the ball or try for a field goal on 4th down. Hope this helps!!!

Well in this case 3rd would represent the down that you are on. You get up to four downs each drive at minimum depending on how good you do. The second number in this case 8 means you have 8 yards to go until you get a first down meaning your downs reset and you start back again at first down. Keep in mind normally you only run your offense on 1st, 2nd and 3rd down while on 4th you normally would kick it or punt it. Hope this helps.

First number is the down (You get 4) and the second is the yards to get to the first down so the team can start over again. first and 10 means first down with ten yards to go......3rd and 5 means 3rd down with five yard to go. If the team does get the ten yards for the first down in 4 attempts they lose the ball to the other team. Or they can punt or kick the ball on 4th down.
