There is nothing wrong with flirting as long as the other party knows it is only that. Otherwise is could be seen as sexual harassment (in the work place)
My suggestion is if it is in the work place DON'T do anything that could be misconstrued as sexual harassment. If you are not sure DON'T DO IT!!!! If you are flirting with someone you know why not! It can be harmless. However, if you are married ask your husband/ wife! Some wives/husbands don't mind their spouses flirting; others do. So to be sure, always ask. Remember YOU might think it is harmless and fun. BUT the other person may not think so.

In today's workplace it could get you fired. People (Americans) are much less tolerant of it than they were, especially the female half. But even so there are regional and cultural differences - Yankees hardly flirt at all whereas it's very common in a place like Tennessee. Latinos flirt a lot more than Yankees, who seem pretty frozen to most people. In general, it's a human thing, but you have to be careful about people's reactions.

I don't know why this question is under Philosophy but anyways...
As long as you have a good common sense flirting is fun. Sometimes it really makes your day. It doesn't matter if you are in a serious relationship, flirting is harmless if is accepted only like a joke from both parties.

Your question is very general so it is hard to answer specifically. If your talking about in men and women relationships, it depends on the couple. Personally, I have a rule that I try to imagine that my wife is standing right next to me when I speak to a member of the opposite sex when she is not there.

If she is there, I try to imagine how I would feel if she was doing what I am very good at, which is flirting. Of course, I wouldn't like it, so I don't.
