You can get your car broken into anywhere. You can get attacked anywhere. The neighborhoods you mentioned are definitely making a huge comeback with all of their beautiful homes. And have great history (definitly look around & check out the chicago historical society they have tours of all those areas). But every area has its not so great spots, so just keep a wary eye & you'll do fine.

Just don't leave anything visible in your car that someone might want (like a purse, cell phone...). & if you are out wandering at night for whatever reason don't act like a victim. Common sense should keep you safe & having a great visit.

Thousands of people live in those areas every day and have been living there for years with no problems. Then again, people have been murdered/raped/etc/ in the Gold coast, Lincoln Park, Roscoe Village... The answer to not being a crime victim is in knowing how to carry yourself, where to walk and where not to walk, when to avoid certain place, etc.

Now, granted, some places are a little more "dangerous" than others. You have to be carefule all over.

The areas you named are predominately black areas (with the possible exception of Hyde Park which is home to the University of Chicago). if that would make you uncomfortable, you might want to look elsewhere. But there are areas in each of those neighborhoods that are not bad areas to live.

Usually, Chicago is a very friendly area, but since it is a big city, you should always definitely be careful everywhere.

They are fairly safe if you live there & know the area & the people. As for a visitor, maybe not so safe.
