the whites had made a treaty with the Sioux to grant them the Black Hills...white invaded this area when gold was discovered there.

Settlements and forts sprang up and encroached nearer. there were a series of battles from the Dakotas to Minnesota and Iowa.

the US government had a policy of genocide...to move them to reservations or kill any that refused to go.

The Sioux and I believe Cheyenne were involved in "ghost dances"...inciting them to deal with the threat of the whites...among other religious ideas, they believed a man wearing a ghost shirt could not be killed with a bullet...anyway, the two groups coalesced into a huge mass after other smaller victories. Custer and The 7th Cavalry, part of a wider net, met the Indians south of Billings at the Little Big Horn River. 1/3 of his men were wiped out....the survivors endured days of sniping behind their dead horses...a few days later the Indians packed up the giant village and tried to enter Canada. I believe there was no real last stand...when Custer crossed the river, his few hundred men, divided into 2 groups in a pincer movement met thousands and thousands of armed warriors...they were killed running away...it took a few hours to kill them all...but there was no moment of glory for Custer, just pandemonium

What were Custer's last words?

"Where did all these f*****g Indians come from?"

That's basically what it was about.
