Some states can't afford to have a professional sports team because there is not enough people who will support the team. Places like New York and Chicago have many teams because there are plenty of fans to attend games and buy team merchandise.

football teams go where there is an audience
new york has 2 teams because it brings lots of people = lots of $
some states dont have teams because they are considered not to have a crowd at their games = less $
basically it comes down to money
