When I see headings such as "black people only please" I've got to read on, and then I've got to answer.
I'm a Southerner. I had one great-great grandfather fight for the North and one great-great grandfather fight for the South.
The flag that is now on capital buildings and people's houses is not the Confederate states flag (patriotic), it is the Confederate battle flag.
In the end, the civil war was about a lot of different things but the primary issue for everyone was allowing a certain group of people to be free (or not). Flying these flags is offensive--especially the battle flag. When I see these flags I do believe people are insensitive at best, and racist at worst. I'm proud of my heritage, and if I wanted to display a flag, I'd put it inside to avoid hurting anyone's feelings (BTW: I don't have a Con. flag).

In response to the white Canadian asking why the confederate battle flag is allowed to be flown--because when last I checked, and though Bush is president, the USA is still a free country.

As a person with african american heritage I personally cannot help but feel a twinge of distaste when I see the flag because of what the Confederacy stood for and was fighting for (among other issues) in keeping the practice of slavery. Any government that would fight for that would never be memorialized in my house, or car, or anything! However, my family is from the south, and I love the southern states......aside from museums and historical purposes - the flag has been used to support the racist ideals of the KKK and other racist people in the south - it's ruined any good portion of the confederate history.

As a black, when I see a confederate flag it makes me cringe. These people wanted to separate from the union and maintain the status quo, as it benefited them economically to own slaves. I know that had they won, blacks (human freakin' beings) would not have been freed in the south. That does not make me feel very patriotic. There is nothing patriotic about someone wanting to own me.

the confederate flag symbolizes that you still want slavery to be going on. that's the entire reason the confederacy broke off from the north, the north wanted to free the slaves.

well, there's african american blood in me somewhere...

how exactly is a confederate flag patriotic? do you feel stirrings of nostalgia when you see a swastika, too? the "stars and bars" is a mockery of all that has happened in the civil rights movement to date. when i see one of those bumper stickers/window decals, i feel nauseated.

I am white and I think of a negitive thing. Just because of what the south was about at the time. NOT COOL. All people are equal

Did you know that no matter what color you are you CAN and WILL be considered a racist when you say something like you have just said! How would you feel if I posted a question that said WHITE PEOPLE ONLY PLEASE?
