x/2-5=7 is the same as 1/2x-5=7, because there is a coeficiant of 1 on every x.
1/2x-5=7
1/2x-5+5=7+5 you get rid of the number that is alone, so you ADD 5 to each side (both sides must be even, and in order to get the left side to 1/2x, you have to add 5, so you must do the same to the right).
1/2x=12
1/2 times 2/1x= 12 times 2/1
x=24
CHECK: 1/2(24)-5=7
12-5=7
7=7
