if it's the Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, it was banned because of the use of the n-word. It's used often and the book also depicts very racist scenes. In an attempt at culture sensitivity, they banned it.

everyone knows the real reason for the ban. it portrays the journey from youth to a self confident adult by a black man who uses the term "invisible" to describe the common view of racist whites towards people of different colors.

It was supposed to be because of violence, sexuality and profanity in the book expressed by "concerned" parents of high school kids.
