I don't think anybody ever seriously believed the moon was made of cheese, it's a line from a poem.
And the "man in the moon" wasn't ever a man *living* there, it's what appears to be a face (if you stretch your imagination) when you look at the full moon. The Chinese saw a rabbit instead of a man's face...humans have a tendency to see familiar forms in random shapes, it's why you get people thinking their toast looks like mother theresa :)

The moon is a woman, Grandmother Moon. If you look closely during a full moon, you can see her face. This is why women's cycles are 28 days, same as the lunar cycle.

no the moon isn't made of cheese it is made of rock and it would take alot of construction to make a base.
