Although I am only a quarter Japanese, I can get very very "brown" when I get a tan. Do you think people will look at me differently, or just as an American? My dear friend is studying about S.A. and she brought this to my attention...just wanted to get a second opinion.

There is much more racism in the USA than in SA. We are the "rainbow nation", thus all colours of the rainbow, the real melting pot.

I find it interesting to read that SA people that replied consider themselves cosmopolitan & a rainbow nation.
After being born & raised in SA for 32 years I left the country 9 years ago for obvious reasons. I moved to Toronto Canada which is considered (by world standards) to be the most cosmopolitan city in the world and let me tell you SA is not cosmopolitan. You must remember that the country did not accidentally get into the situation they are in today. People are not as accepting of each other as it might appear from the answers. Discrimination, racisms and sexist behaviour is at the order of the day. With all due respect to my previous fellow South Africans but people let's get real. Do you honestly know anyone who has not been robbed, raped, hijacked or shot at?

I am shocked by the responses. I agree with "Cichild's" response. I was there last year with my boyfriend who is white. The moment we left the airport, we were literally circus freaks. The blacks stopped, stared, pointed and whispered. The whites gave me dirty looks. One elderly white gentleman stopped and started laughing. Things were much better in Cape Town.

I loved the country but they have a long way to go where racial issues are concerned. My boyfriend played golf with a group of guys who really let him know how they feel about the end of apartheid. of course they did not know his girlfriend is black.

Just go and have fun. For some reason they treat you a little better as soon as they hear an american accent. You'll be fine. My boyfriend and I are actually looking forward to another trip. But I would not live there.

i develop into in South Africa for 3 weeks contained in the three hundred and sixty 5 days 2000. certain, it does have a extreme crime price, notwithstanding the in hardship-free words position I felt risky for in Jo'berg. If I were you i might want to fly into Capetown rather. that's a unprecedented city - you could bypass absailing (repelling) down table Mountain with a brilliant view, you could visit Robin Island the position Nelson Mandela develop into held for decades, then you actually can bypass east alongside the coast. My acquaintances and that i hiked one hundred miles alongside the Indian Ocean and it develop into suited. There are some sharks, through the way. average, i imagine you'll like it, basically be careful, use hardship-free experience, and stay faraway from Jo'berg.

As a pure South African - we have nothing again Asian looking folks!!!

Your friend needs to get her facts straight before she starts telling you such things!

We are the Rainbow nation so we do not discriminate, of course there are people who doesnt know about other cultures so they will stare.

But most South Africans are use to Korean looking folks.
We have such an aray of different people and cultures - so noboy really cares of how you look.

Hope you will enjoy SA

Bit of advice - You have to come to Cape Town during summer - visit Camps Bay beach - there are allot of Asian looking people if you scared you gonna be left out at other places.

South Africans are very open to people of other cultures, and you might even find that the 1/4 Japanese goes down very well in SA. And don't worry about looking "brown" when you get tanned, that's why most folks go to SA. To go to the beach and get a tan.
Make the most of you're holiday, and don't worry, you'll find folks are very nice here.

No-one will look at you any differently. Do as you would in any other country and take precautions. Crime is an issue to deal with but it is not the warzone and negative place so called "realists" like Alf Garnett , Brad Morris and now Cichild make it out to be. Enjoy your visit.

Places like the Stellenbosch and Durbanville wine routes in Cape Town are stunning. The beaches are great. Franschoek has absolutely amazing food as do Moyo at the Spier and the Spier itself. The shopping facilities are on par with some of the best in world (according to some, I'm not a great shopper) and with the weaker rand you'll be able to pick up stuff for dirt cheap.

Have fun. Be safe.

Regarding the issue of mixed race relationships mentioned below, I form part of the group called "coloured" and my fiance is "white". The majority of people have never treated us any differently as a result. Yes, there are some backward idiots from both sides of the colour line who will take issue with it but they are very few and far between.

South Africa has a wide non-negroe population man. You should get a little more information about the place you are visiting like: food and manners not just worry about the colors.

South Africans are generally very friendly and you should be treated well.

Some people (like myself - a minority unfortunately) might initially treat you with EXTREME CAUTION if we found out that you are American. I might treat you somewhat differently because of your 1/4 Japanese blood, I do find Asian men VERY sexy.

Generally, I believe there is less racism in South africa than in USA.
