What Causes Nightmares?
Exactly how or why nightmares occur is not known. However, being too tired, not getting enough sleep, having an irregular routine for sleep, and having stress or anxiety may all increase the risk of having nightmares. Nightmares can be related to the child’s stage of development. Most nightmares are a normal part of coping with changes in our lives. For children, nightmares could be related to events such as starting school, moving to a new neighborhood, or living through a divorce or remarriage.
Some genetic and psychological factors can also lead to nightmares. About 7% of children who have nightmares have a family history of nightmares (their brother or sister or parents had nightmares). Nightmares are more common in some children, including those with mental retardation, depression, and certain diseases that affect the brain. Nightmares may also be associated with fevers. Some medicines can cause frightening dreams, either during treatment or after the treatment has stopped. Conflicts and stress that happen during the day can affect a child’s sleep and lead to nightmares. Nightmares can also occur after a trauma. These nightmares may indicate post-traumatic stress disorder.

Yes I do, there was a time that I sleeping with nightwares for a few months, usually its based on subconcious fear of something, maybe stress, or something that is bothering you and you don't want to face it. Othertimes its psycological, depends... my was stress and after that I face that fact what was doing it... now I'm ok :)
If your not sure what is stimulating subconciously, maybe you must talk to a really good friend about what is bothering you, or see a doctor, it could be some type anxiety that is doing it. Sometimes certain meals or food can do it, like have a big meal before going to bed.
Either case, try to see was it triggering it. OK
Sleepless nights causes the brain not to function properly. So please see some help.

Some are bad and some are frighteningly realistic. I had one dream where "killer clown" John W. Gacy went around neighborhoods helping poor kids and their pets before he became the monster that he was (in reality, he was a businessman and attended charity events as "Pongo the Clown").
If you have nightmares every night you might want to examine what you think about during the day. You may need to see a counselor.

What causes nightmares?
A. There is the dark side of dreams - nightmares, dreams of fear, pain, irrational bad feelings that often cannot be explained. These can become a serious peoblem when you often wake up terrified, when you even don't sleep because of fear of nightmares... Nightmares occur mostly because some problem disturbs you unconsciously but seriously. Some nightmares carry obvious symbols that may indicate where your problems are, but often it is not that easy. Sometimes they can indicate really serious problems like depressions, sometimes just an inadequacy of getting along with yourself. It's difficult.
[Nightmares also occur in normal people without deep underlying problems. --RD]
