We may be buying a car formerly owned by a smoker. There is a film on the simulated wood trim. Does anyone know how to remove it without damaging the surface?

Yes, use a 3M leather and vinyl cleaner. I have learned that there are certain detergents that will permanently ruin the sheen on vinyl, for whatever reason, and even Armor-All won't make it look better. 3M makes a huge line of automotive products so they know what they are talking about. You can find them at any NAPA store. I would NOT recommend methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) or lacquer thinner (which contains acetone).
