I have checked all the cables. I hooked up the monitor to another desktop and it works fine. I have hooked up another monitor to the desktop and it does the same thing. The desktop itself does not go to sleep.

it sounds like you have a problem with your graphics adapter.
try starting your machine in safe mode by pressing f8 at start up to see if the problem persists.

Go into the safemode, if it will let you, and see what kind of video card is showing. If you are running XP, delete the video card in the safemode, and reboot the computer normally. Let XP reinstall the video card. Good luck.

you may have the bios configured wrong for your video go into bios and reset it to the defaults. If this does not resolve then the problem is with your video
