There are 2 ways they do this. They can do a short-term ratings with your household, where they send you a paper log book that you fill out for 'x' amount of days and send it back to them (showing what you watched), or, for longer-term ratings, they can put a box in your house, on each tv, on which you press a button to show who is watching, and it can tell what channel you have it on, etc. There is a button for visitors also, and a way to put the visitors' ages in. They usually compensate you...a one-time check, usually up-front, for the short-term surveys, and a check mailed to you regularly, for a certain amount for each tv you have connected. It's not a lot of money, but it's some, and is not much trouble to do, especially when they hook up the boxes to your tv (the paper one is a little more troublesome, however, it's for a shorter time frame).

They send out questionaires to selected households who then chart the programs they are watching. These households return the forms and Nielsen's compile the info. Some households also participate by having a reporting/tracking device hooked up to their televisions---for immediate results.

If you sign up, you are sent a paper(s) that you put with each tv and when you watch something (tv or tape) you write down what you are watching and at the end of the week you send this form back and they have an idea of what America is watching.

Join up with Nielsen and they hook up a device in your home that tells them what channel(s) your tv is tuned to.
