It is possible to file your own bankruptcy. There are sites that sell the books and forms.

But I strongly recommend you get an attorney. The new laws are extremely complicated. If you make one tiny error, file the wrong forms, don't follow the timelines....in other words make one mistake and your bankruptcy will be discharged.

If that happens you are not allowed to file again for a year. In that time you can bet all your creditors will use the lapse in the "stay" order to hussle through their lawsuits and gete whatever they can before you can file again.

I've seen it happen. Try to avoid the temptation of saving a few dollars in legal fees...have it done right.

The answer is Yes you can do it yourself.

I hate lawyers but GET A LAWYER. You will make some mistake thru ignorance that will cost you more than you could save. The lawyers set up the system to screw anyone but other lawyers. Just the way it is.

we belonged to prepaid legal and it cost us $500, which was cheep, I do suggest you have a lawyer to do things right, we had some complicaitons and we were glad he had the advice and support. It was a difficult decision and I dont regret it, but our credit is really a mess. we dont owe anyone anything and are curreintly renting, but life is much harder financially. I dont think you can do it for free. unless you are really smart, dont do it with out a lawyer

The online services are a dime a dozen; just type "free bankruptcy" into a google search and you'll see what I mean.

Cheers

It is not recommended. Most lawyers specializing in bankruptcies will let you make payments on their fees.
